What is a sleep disorder?

Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that affect sleep duration, timing and quality. They generally affect a person’s daytime functioning.

Disorders Evaluated and Treated by Roaring Fork Sleep & Breathing Consultants:

Snoring

Snoring may suggest a more serious sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring can also be associated with other conditions such as obesity, nasal congestion, hypothyroidism or enlarged tonsils.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition where you have pauses in your breathing for short periods of time while sleeping due to intermittent blockage in your airway. Our portable sleep study allows you to undergo the assessment in the comfort of your own home.

Central Sleep Apnea

In central sleep apnea, you briefly and repeatedly stop breathing during sleep. It occurs when your brain does not send appropriate signals to tell your body to breathe.

Insomnia

Many people have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up too early in the morning making it difficult to function during the daytime. This can be a short-term issue or something that lasts months to years.

Nocturnal Hypoxemia

Patients can experience drops in oxygen levels while sleeping. This can be the result of obstructive sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), high altitude, certain medications and underlying medical conditions.

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

There are certain disorders that can cause people to feel excessively sleepy during the day despite getting a full night’s rest. This could be due to narcolepsy, certain medical conditions, or idiopathic hypersomnia.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome is the uncontrollable urge to move the legs when falling asleep. This can make it difficult to get comfortable and fall asleep.

Unusual Sleep Behaviors

These are called parasomnias and include sleep walking, acting out dreams, night terrors, nightmares, eating while asleep and sleep paralysis.

Internal body clock disorders

Our sleep times remain in alignment by our internal body clock or Circadian Rhythm. A person with one of these disorders does not follow the normal sleep times at night. These include delayed sleep phase, advanced sleep phase and jet lag.

High Altitude Sickness

Also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) occurs when individuals ascend to high elevations too quickly, leading to reduced oxygen levels. This condition can manifest with various symptoms such as nausea or vomiting, headache, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, or shortness of breath upon exertion. In severe cases, it can progress to life-threatening conditions.
